Below-the-card inserts increase the risk for fest scene
FierbergSteven Fierberg, the d.p. who shot "Ten Year" and "The Oranges," both screening in Toronto, features a fantasy: "There's an excellent director inside the audience watching my movie. He appears in my opinion right afterwards and states, 'Oh my god, that was so perfect. You have to shoot my next picture.'"But that's not always the means by which things work, mentioned Fierberg, who visited Toronto on Friday to help promote both films. While festivals are only concerned with creating buzz for films and pedestals for stars and company company directors, below-the-line talent benefits less directly."I am in a position to consider times when I've asked getting a director who mentioned, 'I saw that movie in the festival plus it looked great. I'll hire you.' However this didn't matter that we is at the festival," Fierberg mentioned.Yet many d.p.'s, production designers together with other crew trek to Toronto, Sundance together with other fests -- most often on their own cent -- not only in promote films they've done but to network and advance their careers."Everybody's there therefore i make an effort to meet as much people after i can," mentioned editor Mike Pushinsky, who also done "Ten Year," an ensembler that stars Channing Tatum, Kate Mara and Rosario Dawson. He can't make Toronto this year, but he's traveled to Sundance and Tribeca."It's all about marketing yourself," he mentioned. "That's generate an earnings stay in e-commerce. I even met my agent at Sundance."Indeed, below-the-line agents frequently use fests for own kind of prospecting. Over time "I reduce several clients from Sundance, lots of whom I still repetition," mentioned one agent.Editor Annette Davey, who visited Toronto this year to tubthump "Brooklyn Brothers and sisters Beat the most effective,In . attends fests to network -- also to possibly repeat her 2007 Sundance experience: After "Waitress" examined there, "I obtained a need a job through the festival. Being there boosts your profile."D.p. Bobby Bukowski regrets he can't achieve Toronto, where Oren Moverman's "Rampart," they shot, gets its premiere. Nonetheless, "I have not found prone to festivals serves to secure new jobs," he mentioned. "Allow me to think a director desires to collaborate with me at night based on my figure at work, not my personality."Another d.p. who'll not maintain Toronto is Martin Ruhe, who shot the fest's "Page Eight," helmed by David Hare. Ruhe did attend Cannes when "Control" opened up up, and visited the London fest for your premiere of "The American." But Ruhe doesn't positively promote themselves at fests. "I love the parties, however i am bad at walking around people," he mentioned.Mark Dornfeld's vfx shingle Custom Film Effects done two photos screening in Toronto -- Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," with George Clooney, and "Butter," starring Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner -- but he sees pointless in attending. "I'm throughout my studio, working," he mentioned. "We have business mostly through existing associations, just like Alexander and also the editor Kevin Tent." "Descendants" is his third pic with Payne.Bookings & SigningsJonathan Silverman, with Global Artists Agency, features onboard d.p. Fox, NBC and HBO Will Not Air 9/11 Specials on Sunday
The tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001 will be commemorated on Sunday with a variety of documentaries and specials on virtually every channel, but with three major exceptions. NBC, Fox and HBO will not be airing any 9/11-themed programming that night.our editor recommends9/11 Anniversary: What the TV Networks Are PlanningSeptember 11 News Coverage Collected in Internet Archive According to the New York Times, more than 75 total hours of programming will be devoted to looking back on the terrorist attacks of a decade ago. However, NBC is planning to air an NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets. Fox will air an NFL game in the afternoon, followed by its traditional Sunday animation block of The Simpsons and Family Guy and HBO will be airing the season finales of True Blood and Curb Your Enthusiasm, along with the series finale of Entourage. When reached for comment, Michael Lombardo, president for programming at HBO, said, "We didn't, obviously, choose to have our finales hit on 9/11." He went on to point out the number of documentaries on the subject the channel has aired over the years. Among the more notable 9/11 plans: CBS will air a Robert DeNiro-hosted special, 9/11: 10 Years Later. ABC will air a special edition of its newsmagazine 20/20 titled Remembrance and Renewal: 10 Years After the 9/11 Attacks. And the Science Channel will air an encore broadcast of Steven Spielberg's six-hour documentary The Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero. Related Topics NBC HBO FOX 9/11

REVIEW: Contagion Treats Star-Studded Pandemic With Stone-Cold Tension
[Minor early spoilers may follow, particularly for anyone who’s avoided Contagion’s trailer or coverage from Venice. — Ed.] No one is safe in Contagion — not from the MEV-1 virus that ricochets out of a crowded Macau casino to cut down a sizable selection of the global population with frightening plausibility, and not from Steven Soderbergh’s pitiless refusal to abide by the unspoken rules of the mainstream movie. A few minutes in, a child who’d previously been shown sniffling and feverish turns up dead, his gaze fixed and lifeless. Almost more unsettling is the passing of Minnesota executive Beth Emhoff, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, shortly before. We’d just been introduced to Beth, just met her family, just gotten the hint that she’s had an extramarital dalliance during her business trip abroad, and yet she’s flopping on the floor in the grip of a seizure, and then is gone, so abruptly her shocked spouse Mitch (Matt Damon) keeps asking to speak to her even as he’s informed of her death. Contagion’s killing off of an inarguable movie star at its outset is a kind of a shorthand summation of what’s about to happen to its world — a virus has no regard for wealth, ethnicity, gender or class, so why should a film about one offer an exception to a character just because she has qualities we associate with a protagonist? As Beth’s doctor observes, “Some people get a disease and live, some get sicker and die.” There are plentiful plot threads here, most attached to familiar faces — Marion Cotillard as a World Health Organization specialist, Laurence Fishburne as the head of the Center for Disease Control, Kate Winslet as a doctor sent to liaise with locals near a major outbreak, Jennifer Ehle and Demetri Martin as lab workers — but Contagion doesn’t belong to any one of those characters. They’re there to provide viewpoints into a global disaster, and the film’s concern isn’t the survival of any of those individuals so much as it is the idea of civilization and whether it will hold up under the external force of a deadly contagious virus and the internal pressure of panic and fear mongering. That society comes down to an agreement to abide by rules and to think of yourself as a cooperating member of a large group is the underlying theme of Contagion — as is the moment it breaks down and everyone turns instead to looking out for themselves and their loved ones, competing for the resources needed for survival. Putting the larger good above what’s best and safest for you and your people is a dilemma confronted again and again as the film goes on, and there are as many moments of rupture as there are instances of quiet nobility. While stuck in quarantined Minnesota, Damon’s character, Contagion’s stalwart everyman, watches as government-provided rations run out and the crowd rushes the trucks, and a similar scene takes place in San Francisco as rioters refuse to wait in line for limited doses of a rumored holistic cure. (That these scenes have echoes in recent news footage of the London riots certainly doesn’t dull their impact.) Scattered survivors in a Chinese village take a hostage to move themselves to the forefront of any medical developments, while a local government rep in Minneapolis is more concerned over whose budget an emergency triage center is coming out of than its implications. If this all sounds a little cold, it can be. While it’s fleet on its feet and steady in its tension, Contagion is an exceptionally dry-eyed movie about mass death, interested more in how the structures we’ve built to keep order deal with the disaster than how people handle it emotionally. That’s never more evident than in the passing of a prominent character who’s falls ill while working to organize relief efforts and is reduced to a body in a bag in one devastating edit — one minute a potential savior, the next fodder for a mass grave, alone and far from home. But this refusal to sentimentalize also makes displays of sacrifice and bravery all the more powerful — when one no-nonsense CDC researcher, having worked tirelessly to find a vaccination for a virus that tends to kill cells before they can even be cultivated, makes a decision that will help speed along a potential cure, she’s practically lit from within with grace. Contagion’s restraint is marred by one element — Alan Krumwiede, the San Francisco-based activist blogger played by Jude Law, a conspiracy theorist who wields claims about uncovering the truth like a blunt instrument intended to menace. He’s not always incorrect — as the film acknowledges, there are plentiful privileges to being in the right places and knowing the right people. But Krumwiede may be the year’s most repellent villain, a man who uses the pretense of working for the people to spread and capitalize on panic, who rationalizes monstrously self-interested behavior and never seems to feel shame or regret, and for whom journalism is entirely about narcissism and expanding his own self-made bully pulpit. “Blogging isn’t writing, it’s graffiti with punctuation,” sniffs one of Krumwiede’s targets, but Krumwiede could just as easily have been the blowhard host of a cable news show; the platform matters less than the habit of leveraging fame out of public fear and misinformation. Law is more compelling than he’s been in years as the hateful amateur reporter, but the character never seems human, his psychology murky even as the point he proves about the power of the promise of forcefully unveiled secrets rings true. Contagion marks time in numbers, tracking how long it’s been since the virus first appeared — Day 2, Day 26, Day 141 — but tracking people in numbers too, noting the populations of each new city at which it and the illness arrives. Hong Kong, London, Chicago, Tokyo — the ease and speed with which MEV-1 spreads is a reminder that we’re living in a global society, one through which information can pass as quickly as infection. And given the teeming, impersonal masses through which the first sick characters stumble, the film’s affirmation of the connection humanity provides us is unexpectedly uplifting, the elements we have in common holding up against the animal chaos of a blind drive for survival.
Finale Review: Save Me
Denis Leary Couple of situations are as pleasing than watching an excellent episode of TV by having an appreciative audience. Such was the situation Wednesday evening when Forex tested the Save Me finale (my second viewing, but my first about the giant screen) at New York's grand Ziegfeld Theater, an advantage for Denis Leary's Firefighters Foundation. Fittingly, numerous NYFD's finest were within the crowd, laughing whatsoever the best places and entertaining at many more (and looking after a sincere silence when things got serious, which never survived for very lengthy). It had been a triumphant finish to 1 of cable's most distinctive (if sometimes maddening) series, a highly-timed tribute towards the 343 firefighters who died on September 11, 2001 - the tragedy that inspired, haunted and informed this show and it is mercurial co-creator/star Denis Leary in the get-go.Want more Matt Roush? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!Finding yourself in Tommy Gavin's mind was always an unsettling spot to be, which is made amazingly apparent one further time because the episode opens on the dream sequence that feels very real. Lou (John Scurti, taking advantage of his swan song) provides a stirring eulogy to his fallen brethren within the wake of last week's cataclysmic fire - except this is not the actual funeral. Lou, it works out, was the only real fatality from the explosion, harrowingly replayed in flashback as Tommy completes the documents. An activity that nearly drives him to drink - another fake-out once we watch Tommy lower some Scotch and trash work, except he really did not.A lot of the episode involves Tommy's "must i stay or must i go" dilemma. He flirts with retirement to fulfill his very pregnant wife Jesse, but individuals who know him best know better. "You'll need a couple of things to outlive: sex and fire. A person's not good with no other," coos Sheila (Callie Thorne, nailing it as always) as she straddles the appalled Tommy. He sees the sunshine - in other words, his more youthful daughter Katy does - after he clashes amusing in a "discussing playground" by having an emasculated "Mr. Mother" and many strongly uptight mommys. "I do not think this will work - your real life," declares a global-weary Katy. This scene got the 2nd-greatest response in the Ziegfeld audience. Top honors visited the fabulously slapstick scene of Lou's ashes ("Ashes" being the episode's title) overflowing throughout his pals within the vehicle. It is a "Lou-mageddon" as Tommy and also the gang are covered in Lou's remains, and we are playing the look of Garrity squatting within the box to shake out what remains of the beloved leader. Having a ceremonial scattering of Lou pending, these Keystone Firefighters choose to supplement what remains of him having a box of Duncan Hines red-colored velvet chocolate cake mix. Father Mickey is not misled, but hey, it's difficult to find gray food, as Tommy rather frantically rationalizes.Even while Garrity continues trembling Lou-ash from his ears, we are disarmed by Lou's letter-from-beyond eulogy, read by Tommy, who eventually ends up explaining themself like a "fight-damaged, haunted, formerly drunken Irish a-hole who screws up his existence like others breathe." Because the bagpipes wail "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," we high-tail it to the Gavin house, where Jesse adopts preposterously sudden labor - pushing credulity even by Save Me's loose standards - and Tommy provides his new boy (named Shea, minimal objectionable variation on Lou's title) before fainting. When he wakes, Jesse begs him revisit his vocation before she kills him, a not altogether convincing reversal, but possibly inevitable within this show's cockeyed worldview. We finish having a call to the series' beginning, as Tommy addresses a brand new gaggle of probies, standing before a backdrop of names of 9/11's fallen heroes. Franco is introduced because the bellowing new CO, so that as Tommy retreats to his vehicle, he's welcomed with a new ghost. Lou, naturally, as undyingly droll as always. As well as on this Topper of the buddy act, Save Me draws to some close, as happy an ending because the conditions allow which we're able to expect. DreamWorks, Fox To Co-Finance Steven Spielbergs Robopocalypse
EXCLUSIVE: Steven Spielberg’s next film is so big, it needs two studios. DreamWorks and Fox are near a deal to co-finance Robopocalypse, a Drew Goddard-scripted adaptation of the Daniel H. Wilson epic novel about the human races attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising. I’m told that Disney will release domestically and Fox will distribute the film overseas. Deadline broke the story that Spielberg was eyeing the novel as a directing vehicle, before he instead chose War Horse as the first film he directed for DreamWorks since Spielberg and Stacey Snider left Paramount and made a deal with Reliance and a distribution deal at Disney. We also revealed last October that he had committed to direct it. Doubleday published the book in June. Fox and DreamWorks previously tried to get together back in 2009 on Harvey, where Spielberg was going to direct an adaptation of Mary Chases Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a man who befriends a six-and-a-half-foot-tall invisible rabbit. Spielberg finally withdrew from that film partly because it was so difficult to find the right actor to play Elwood P. Dowd, the character originated by James Stewart in the 1950 film. Now, the studios have a Spielberg project they can team on.

Chris Tucker's Box Office Average States He Does not Need to Work More Frequently
Earlier today, various trades reported that Chris Tucker is circling two large Hollywood roles — one out of David O. Russell’s The Silver Textures Playbook and also the other in Neighborhood Watch opposite Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill. Almost all reviews also noted that Tucker continues to be strangely enough absent in the box office since 2007’s Hurry Hour 3, that is strange thinking about the actor was in the center of work upswing that began with Friday, ongoing together with his Jackie Chan franchise and may have ended using the actor becoming probably the most marketable celebrities this decade. But after a little careful math, Movieline HQ let you know precisely why Tucker was liberated to retreat in the box office… To put it simply: Maybe he just didn't have to work. Yes, it goes against exactly what our money-grubbing, empire-building society means but maybe Chris Tucker is simply old-fashioned like this. Let’s have a look in the actor’s worldwide box office average first to determine what type of box office energy the actor had when turning lower easy publish-Hurry Hour salary roles. · Friday: $28.two million (1995) · Dead Presidents: $24.a million (1995)* · The 5th Element: $263.9 million (1997) · Money Talks: $48.4 million (1997) · Jackie Brown: $39.7 million (1997)* · Hurry Hour: $244.4 million (1998) · Hurry Hour 2: $347.3 million (2001) · Hurry Hour 3: $258. million (2007) Box Office Average: $156.75 million So yeah, with this type of B.O. average (along with a reported $48 million staying with you for his operate in the Hurry Hour trilogy), Tucker was liberated to play hardball. While marketing a mix-country comedy tour this summer time that stored the comedy actor sharp (and compensated), Tucker told the brand new You are able to Occasions the parts he was offered since 2007 were too much like Hurry Hour and “frankly, just weren’t adequate.” The content also noted that Tucker appeared “supremely certain that he is able to get wherever he left off.” And here i am today, with Tucker poised to re-go into the Hollywood fold. Now if perhaps other comedy stars might have the confidence and sophistication to restrain from littering the multi-plex with brainless salary projects, the film-going world will be a better place. However I guess Eddie Murphy has proven that no quantity of flops and body fat suits can prevent you from the Academy Award podium. *Denotes the title wasn't launched theatrically outdoors from the U.S. All box office figures obtained from BoxOfficeMojo.com The return of Chris Tucker has its own ‘Silver Textures’ [Variety Showblitz]

Stations build up 'beachfront' property
Live Well Network shows include the travelogue "Motion," hosted by Greg Aiello. It's produced by the ABC O&O in Fresno, Calif.
The nation's housing market may still be in a deep slump, but there's a seemingly unrestrained real estate boom under way in broadcast TV.Station owners and program distributors are finally getting serious about developing the potential of the digital multicast channels that so many broadcasters have been sitting on for years. With the transition to digital broadcasting, most full-power TV stations have the bandwidth to offer as many as four to six digital multicast channels in addition to their mothership signals. It amounts to an extraordinary windfall of advertising-supported programming opportunities for ambitious station owners and entrepreneurs.Atlanta-based Bounce TV is the latest startup to join the land rush. The channel, set to bow Sept. 26, aims to target African-Americans in the 25-54 demo with a mix of movies, TV reruns and college sports.A number of fledgling outlets have taken a page from the old Nick at Nite playbook -- acquiring inexpensive, vintage series and dressing them up with goofy interstitials that play well with TV fanatics. In January, Tribune Broadcasting launched Antenna TV, while Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting kicked off the national rollout of its Me-TV service that has operated for several years as an offshoot of its WCIU-TV Chicago. Weigel has been a multicasting pioneer, partnering with MGM in 2008 to launch the movie-centric This TV digital channel.Among the Big Four O&O groups, ABC has been the most active in developing original programming under the Live Well Network banner -- a mix of lifestyle, entertainment, foodie and travelogue fare. With all the production infrastructure and talent available through the net's eight O&O stations, ABC execs felt a sense of urgency to harness their untapped resources."We kept saying to ourselves that it's like we own beachfront property but we don't even have a shack on it," says Emily Barr, prexy and g.m. of ABC's WLS-TV Chicago, who spearheaded the launch of Live Well in April 2009.Although TV's transition to all-digital broadcasting was completed in June 2009, many stations were slow to move ahead with subchannels because the local ad market was in such bad shape at that time, and because there wasn't much to choose from for stations that didn't want to invest in producing or even repurposing their own material. Now, however, broadcasters have another incentive to fill up those digital slots. The FCC wants to auction off some of the digital spectrum allocated to broadcasters for wireless services, as it warns of a looming broadband service crunch. TV station owners will have a stronger case to make for holding on to every bit of their scarce resource if they're carrying an array of outlets -- especially those reaching underserved TV viewers like Bounce's target aud.Local broadcast stations "have an intense need for meaningful programming for their digital signals," says Bounce TV prexy Ryan Glover, a former Turner Broadcasting exec. "Plus, there's never been a television network targeting African-Americans available for free, over the air. We see that as the business opportunity."The business model for the nationally oriented services is essentially barter syndication writ large. Stations give up a portion of their advertising inventory in each hour (typically a 50-50 split) in exchange for the programming. The distrib packages those spots for national advertisers, while the affiliates handle local sales. ABC specifically designed Live Well to be free of any Alphabet or Mouse House imprimatur in order to make it attractive to non-ABC affiliate stations. By year's end, it's projected to be carried on stations covering 45% of U.S. TV households and, most important, it is already turning a profit, Barr says. Bounce TV projects it will be available in more than 50% of the U.S. at launch. The biggest challenge for the new services is marketing (of course) and securing carriage beyond over the air. So far, cable is spotty and the services are nonexistent on DirecTV and Dish.In contrast to ABC's approach, NBC's focus has been on the hyperlocal sector with the region-specific channels it has rolled out on its O&Os during the past year (Nonstop New York, Nonstop Philadelphia, Nonstop California, etc.).CBS is about to take a similar tack, starting later this month with the launch of a subchannel in New York that will draw content from WCBS-TV as well as the Eye's Gotham radio outlets. Subchannels for KCBS-TV Los Angeles and other Eye O&Os in major markets will follow soon.Fox has yet to publicly unveil plans for digital subchannels on any of its 27 outlets. But that is likely to change as its competitors get busier in the arena. Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com
